Behind The Lens

Location

This was shot at Ameenpur Lake, Hyderabad, India.

Time

I remember it was in the late afternoon (around 4pm IST), I was walking towards the lake, observed this raptor gliding around the lake. I waited patiently behind a tree, and captured this beauty.

Lighting

It was around 4pm, I wanted to freeze the motion, so I used shutter speed of 1/4000 and bumped ISO around 800.

Equipment

I used Canon 700D with 55-250mm lens. No tripod / monopod or any other equipment used.

Inspiration

Knowing that birds are incredibly intelligent and have to be treated very carefully, I approached it an angle, walked on toes, in order to avoid crunching leaves and maintained silence.

Editing

Cropped a bit, adjusted exposure and contrast.

In my camera bag

Currently, I use Nikon Z6 II as primary camera 70-200 f/2.8, 150-600mm & 20mm 1.8 lenses.

Feedback

Getting close enough to photograph birds, without disturbing them or causing them to flee, is probably the most challenging part of bird photography. If you're a beginner or an amateur, it is important to have patience, maintain silence, walk on toes (to avoid crunching leaves), blend in by wearing camouflage instead of wearing bright colored dress. If you visit any hotspot areas, look for bird movement in trees and bushy areas. Try not to look at the bird directly and don't walk straight towards bird.
