Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken near the Wedge in Newport Beach, CA, shortly before sunset. The waves crash forcefully against each other.

Time

It is one of my favorite photos, taken at dusk, when the sky turns softly orange, offsetting the color of the ocean. I had no tripod, as the sand is steep and difficult to maneuver.

Lighting

I wanted the waves to create the drama, inviting the viewer be mesmerized and tranquilized by nature during the unique moment of time and day. The low lighting level is challenging without a tripod.

Equipment

I was shooting this with my Iphone, no flash or tripod, just holding my Iphone close to my chest for stabilization.

Inspiration

The Wedge can be a great place to catch sunset photos. This particular day had a mellow quiet sunset, and I wanted to capture the juxtaposition between the crashing waves and the calmness of this time of day.

Editing

Yes, I made some editing in Snapseed, to highlight the tip of the waves.

In my camera bag

I always carry my Iphone to be able to capture on the spur of the moment. Otherwise I carry my Olympus OM-D Mark II, with a zoom lens, 14-150

Feedback

Dawn and dusk are my favorite times to capture landscapes. Living along the coast in Southern California the hour around dusk is truly mesmerizing and unpredictable, as the sunset may be brilliant and dramatic, or the sun may settle behind clounds and barely provide any golden reflections. Patience is key, you just cannot plan what yuo may encounter.
