Behind The Lens

Location

Taken on a visit to a friends hobby farm in Whakapirau a charming seaside village on the shores of the Kaipara Harbour, New Zealand. She had some ducks hatch three days before I arrived, so they were still at that lovely fluffy stage.

Time

Early morning making use of the beautiful soft light. Being early the ducklings were less frantic and didn't run about so much, this meant I could use a slower shutter speed

Lighting

I positioned myself so the duckling was Lit from behind and slightly to the right so the fine hairs would stand out making it look even cuter. Also getting a catch light in the prominent eye.

Equipment

Canon EOS 7D Mark II 18-135 3.5 - 5.6 Kit lens Hand held Natural sunlight

Inspiration

The character of the little balls of fluff as they were running around and being inquisitive was absolutely infectious. I wanted to try and catch their spirit and look of mischievousness. I think getting in close showed off this character with just a bed of straw out of focus in the background to give a sense of place.

Editing

It's funny, I've spent hours post processing photo's before and received less interest than this photo which is pretty much straight out of camera save for some slight cropping. I think maybe the naturalness of the photo is probably what makes it more appealing.

In my camera bag

Camera's Canon 7D MK II, Canon 1300D Lenses Canon 100-400, Canon 18-135, Canon 10-18 Manfrotto mini tripod Spare Batteries and Memory cards Set of ND filters, Polarizer filters Infrared remote, Old phone with Canon direct, stellarium, and other photography tools. Notepad and Pencil Compass

Feedback

Make a small pen to keep them in a small area, that way you can control the shoot a lot easier. I also took some photo's of the ducklings and a copy of Heston Blumenthal's Fat Duck cook book in a pan with a couple of carrots, and sent it to him, he thought it was amusing
