The Cholla has sharp,barbed needles, and, like the Prickly Pear, there is a beautiful flower that comes from the buds. During drought, It has only these buds, slowly turning from dark green to bright yellow. They are edible, if you're brave enough to chance the spines and glochids! Simmered till tender, they taste like a combination of green bean, artichoke heart and asparagus.
