Location
This photo was taken on the Chattahoochee River, Columbus GA, USA. There is an island of rocks that sets into the river that permitted me a great location and angle for my brave friends shooting one of the more challenging whitewater rapids.Time
Early afternoon with high sun. It's my favorite time of day to shoot as the intense natural light accents the rapids.Lighting
High sun can be your friend. Don't be reluctant to shoot close to noon on the river. Angle of capture can actually use the sun to make the rapids pop. The colors of the raft and helmets are also intensified naturally.Equipment
Nikon D7000 with a Nikkor zoom lens.Inspiration
I've captured several white water rafting trips with friends over the years but most of the shots were from above or behind. I really wanted to find a location where the capture would bring the raft and rafters right at you. The intensity on the faces of the rafters as they enter a challenging rapid was a major goal for the capture.Editing
Nothing more than some cropping to bring them a little closer. In my camera bag
It varies but 90% of my equipment has been all Nikon for several years.Feedback
Scout the rock formations and access points that are mostly safe to get to along the major rapids. Be careful and wear shoes that maintain a good grip. Fly fishing boots work great.
