Description
Former annunciaten monastery, erected in 1627-1629 according to squared plan in traditional brick and sandstone style.

History
Until about 1830, a chapel dedicated to St. Jacob of Compostella was located on the corner of the Waijkbergstaat and the Veldbornstraat on the northern edge of the city, near the Lintersepoort. According to pastor De Ridder, the St. Jacob's chapel, mentioned since 1319, was originally a castral chapel that depended on the nearby Waaiberg court. An annunciate monastery was built around this chapel in 1627-1629. In 1627 the annunciatenklooster of Leuven (1529-1784) of the Sint-Germanuskapittel got permission to establish a new monastery in Tienen. To this end, the Tiense chapter made the St. Jacob's chapel available to the Waaiberg, a donation supplemented with a private donation consisting of a large orchard of 56 ares 70 centimeters along the Veldbornstraat. They obtained a patent from the magistrate on 19 March 1628 for the purchase of a plot of 3 day wall next to the chapel. At the end of March 1629, the new monastery that was connected to the old chapel with its northeast corner was completed, after which eight religious from Leuven, led by mater ancilla, Anna Wielant († 1655), moved in.

On June 9, 1635 during the capture of Tienen by the Dutch and French troops, the monastery that at that time counted fifteen religious, was plundered and completely robbed. In contrast to mostly elsewhere in the city, the buildings themselves were spared.

With the support of baron de Baudequin de Peuthy, among other things, the religious received official permission on 23 August 1783 to open a girls' school so that they could escape the threatening abolition under the edict of Joseph II as a contemplative order. Finally, on November 11, 1796, they were expelled from their convent by the French. The 28 religious stayed together and found succession in a private home in the Minderbroedersstraat and in the current Gilainstraat in Tienen. On May 16, 1798 the monastery was sold to physician Nicolaes Meys with all the appurtenances and orchard. Shortly afterwards, in September 1798, the monastery complex was sold to gardener (?) Jean François Smets (Desmedt) and wife who later transferred it to their daughter Maria Catharina Desmedt.

From 1800 to 1823, the annunciates, once again as tenants, again took over part of their convent and finally left it. Thanks to the financial intervention of Baron de Baudequin de Peuthy and through the mediation of the Knight de Wouters d'Oplinter, a building could be acquired in the Broekstraat on 13 March 1823, after which the eleven remaining religious people took up residence and opened a school. The monastic community managed to recover in such a way that in 1853 the foundation of a new monastery in Geel could be established. In order to better accommodate the school, a larger building was purchased in the Oude Vestenstraat in 1919. As a result of a shortage of vocations and the required certificates, the school was left in 1947. Finally, in 1965, the remaining three Belgian annunciate monasteries were merged and the Tiense community moved to Merksem, waiting for a new monastery to be built.

More than twenty years after the annunciates had definitively left their convent, it was on 4 November 1846 by then-owner Maria Catharina Desmedt, now widow of Franciscus Josephus Collon, as "irrevocable gift under living" transferred to landowner in Sint-Niklaas, Petrus Antonius Verwilghen- Hemelaer, who acted as an intermediary for nine religious from Dendermonde. The condition was that the religious would close both courtyards with a wall and that a new chapel was built. The old Sint-Jacobskapel had been demolished since the 1830s, which would form the basis for the allotment and development of the northern edge of the monastery site, on the Waaibergstraat.

On March 29, 1848, the Dendermain religious sold only two years later, monastery and grounds with an area of 31 are 1 centiare to her brother-in-law Alexandre Collon.
