Michelangelo's David is one of the most recognized works of Renaissance sculpture. In 1504, Michelangelo, then only 26 years old, was given the official contract to begin work on the 5.17-meter (17 ft) statue.

The sculpture was originally commissioned as one of a series of statues to be positioned along the roofline of the Florence Cathedral. It was later placed outside the town hall, Palazzo Vecchio. Because of the nature of the hero it represented, the statue came to symbolize resistance to the ever-threatened liberties of the Republic of Florence. The eyes of David, with a warning glare, were turned towards Rome.
