Lightning Over Muskoka
During a recent night in Muskoka my friend and I went out to chase storm chase. We drove down the road to check several locations near the Torrance Barrens but sadly many places were overrun with people camping for the long weekend. We drove a little ways further and decided to stop and check a marsh on the roadside. A great advantage with having a friend storm chasing along side is to have someone checking the radar while the other drives. Checking an accurate radar often is the key to safe chasing. With this storm we had several things to keep an eye on including rotation, hail and heavy downpour. The goal was to keep at the edge of the storm system while also keeping close enough to get some good lightning photographs. Once we got to the location and out of the car we setup the tripods and cameras pointing over the calm water and started capturing images. I quickly snapped one frame before checking exposure and focus. Snapped another frame to preview and then I captured one more with this beautiful cloud to cloud lightning. I was so happy as I knew my camera was capturing the bolt but I was complete unsure on the composition yet as we had only just setup. I looked at the back of the camera in anticipation, waiting and waiting making 10 seconds feel like an eternity. The camera shutter closed, I quickly selected to preview and my jaw dropped. Woohoo, I captured a big lightning bolt and the reflection! I knew right there that this was my shot for the night.
Sony a7s (full spectrum modified) - Optolong E-EF adapter + Optolong UV-IR cut filter - Rokinon 35mm t-1.4 - f-8 - 30 seconds - ISO 100
