This shot was taken from the edge of a cliff at the most north-westerly point in Ireland, Donegal.Time
It was taken around lunchtime on a VERY windy day which only added to the movement in the water against the rocks. We reached as far as we could via a 4x4 vehicle & then had to walk the remaining distance through fields full of sheep.Lighting
It was taken around lunchtime but because it was a heavily overcast day the light was very soft & even which was conducive to a long exposure.Equipment
It was captured on a Nikon D810 with Nikkor 24-70mm & a Lee Big Stopper on a Really Right Stuff tripod with a BH-55 bullhead over a 3 minute exposure.Inspiration
It was a tricky location to get the best framing as there are limited positions where you can see clearly over the edge of the cliff to avoid elements encroaching into the bottom edge of the frame. I wanted to capture the sheer ruggedness of the location & I loved the way the light was falling on the rocks. The waves were significantly crashing on the rocks but the long exposure softened them completely.Editing
There really wasn't much processing required other than a little colour correction due to the tint you get from the Big Stopper but this was helped through the earlier use of a Colorchecker passport.In my camera bag
I tend to like options so I typically carry the whole gamut from the 14-24mm right up to the 70-200 and there's rarely a day where they don't all get pulled out of the bag at one point or another! I also like to use the 24mm PC-e lens (tilt-shift) whenever I can as it allows you to take shots that a standard lens simply isn't able to.Feedback
It's hard to go wrong on the coastline of Donegal, there are some truly stunning locations to visit, the trick to this kind of shot is a very sturdy tripod and some patience getting the correct exposure as it takes time waiting for a 3min exposure to complete!
