Location
I took this photograph in Boston. I was touring the city with my wife and saw this amazing reflection in the windows of this tallest building in Boston. I thought the reflection amazing and could not help think how this city successfully blended the old with the new. A great job Boston.Time
This was during the morning. The problem with non-photographic tours is that the light is not of your choosing and you have to hone your skills to take photographs at any time of day under any time of cloud cover or not. In this case you can seen a cloudy non-descript overcast reflected in the windows around the reflection of the ancient church.Lighting
The lighting was what it was and a photographer has to use their skills to balance their aperture, shutter speed, exposure, and white balance with what they want to achieve. Being on a tour, their is no time for a tripod, so the shot has to be taken hand held, so the lighting has to be incorporated into the choices for the shot.Equipment
I used my travel lens and my Sony A7RII. The travel lens does limit the amount of light that gets through the lens. At the same time I can shoot from wide angle to a moderate telephoto range. I do not use a lens hood on this lens as I find it ofter interferes with my shot. Shooting in raw allows me to do more to try and balance the the shadows and highlights in post production.Inspiration
Just the sure scale of the reflection and the contrast between the new construction of the downtown and the preservation of the old construction inspired me to take this photograph. If I was being philosophical you can see the big changes these two elements of the shot show; the building of a church and the building of a symbol of a company. Different eras, different purposes for what people do.Editing
Yes with any photograph shot in raw the photograph is enriched by working with the shadows and highlights to try to bring back out what you originally saw when taking the photo that inspeired you. Also the photograph has to be rendered in jpeg for display, while at the same time preserving the pixels so that if wanted the photograph will also make an excellent print. Other things must be chosen like what colour space did the camera shoot in. That should agree with your final photograph. In my camera bag
I carry a variety of prime lens, flash, NDA and polarizing filters, dust and lens cleaning tools and ingredients, extra memory cards and batteries, a battery charger, and if I am going to have the chance to use it either a tripod or monopod. On this occassion I saw I would not have the time for either of the latter, as the tour guide moved us quickly from place to place, not if I wanted to know the history and importance of the many archietectual and art and sculpture that are part of Boston. Even the names of streets and places have a story.Feedback
Watch for opportunities if you want to take a similar photograph. Always have your camera handy. Unless you can wait all day for the angle of reflection and light to be right, you need to grab the photo in the moment it is in the right place and the right angle and the right light.
