WRAY CASTLE
Wray Castle is a Victorian neo-gothic house, set in 64 acres of woodland, built in 1840 for a retired Liverpudlian surgeon, James Dawson. Situated a stone's throw from the western shore of Lake Windermere, Cumbria, UK, and served by a regular ferry service from other venues on the lake, Wray Castle is now owned by the National Trust and open to the public.
This photo was a tricky one to get the exposure right. The side of the castle I wanted to capture was in shadow, with a bright overcast sky behind it. Exposing for the sky meant the castle walls were in dark shadow, while exposing for the walls meant the sky was blown out completely. The solution was to take three "bracketed" shots (one my camera decided was the correct exposure, one under-exposed and one over-exposed) and to merge them into a single image in Photoshop. The result is a fairly well-balanced image with plenty of detail in the sky and the walls.

Thanks, Jess. It cost almost $10 each to go inside, and I knew from research online that there wasn't much to see inside, so we didn't bother.

Lovely framing choices in this shot! And I like all the detail on the castle walls!

Many thanks, Suz. Incidentally, Doctor Dawson squandered his wife's fortune to build this folly, but she hated it and refused to live there!
