I shot this image in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam in February. It was very warm out, 30+ celsius... but the pool was freezing cold! :)Time
It was late in the afternoon, just after 5, and we had been shopping in the city. I had seen this suit in the window of a store in the shopping district, and I was immediately drawn to it's unusual shape. We got back to where we were staying, we headed down to the pool, the sun was setting behind the camera, and I used a reflector to add a little additional fill.Lighting
Aside from a golden reflector to add a little fill, the sun provided all the light we needed for this shot, it was just above the rooftop of the neighbouring building, so we didn't have a lot of time before we were going to be in shadow.Equipment
I shot this with my Canon 6D, and a 70-200mm 2.8 lens. I also used a golden reflector to lighten the shadows just a touch.Inspiration
This swimsuit looked great in the store, we went inside, and Olivia tried it on. As soon as she came out, we both knew we were going to be shooting in this suit soon!Editing
A basic conversion to black and white, with a little tweaking of the levels was all that was needed here. The sun turned out to be just right for us that day.In my camera bag
I was travelling, so I had to walk a balance between having the gear I wanted, and having to haul it around Asia for a few weeks. I did have 2 Canon bodies with me (a 6D and a 60D), a 24-105, my favorite lens, the 70-200, and my nifty 50, because, there's really never a reason not to take that nifty 50 anywhere! :) Aside from that, a couple reflectors, and one speedlight. Turned out to be everything I needed for that trip.Feedback
This is a tough question to answer... first, you start with an amazing model... that never hurts. Beyond that when I'm looking to shoot swimwear, I look for a few specifics... either, classic, like a black string bikini, or solid colours that pop. If I don't feel like there's enough interest created from that, I start looking at unique or very interesting suits. This suit in particular had some very interesting parts, I liked the shape of it, and it matched up with Olivia's shape too. If you can get a match like that between the suit and the model, you're probably good to go. Ideally, I would have liked to shoot this in the morning, I always find that sunrise light usually looks best, but because of where we were staying, that wasn't an option, but I think late afternoon worked out pretty well for us anyway!
