Great colors and perfect DOF

Behind The Lens

Location
This photo was taken at home in spring. Spring was very cold and rainy here in France and I was bored of shooting at home so we tried to boost our creativity and so I used a flash to darken the background and get rid of it and used all that colored powder.
Time
It was in the middle of the day, in my living room, as it was very dark because of the terrible weather, it was easy to overpower the ambient light with a single speedlight.
Lighting
Lighting here was quite simple. One single speedlight in a softbox on my left, I just set enough power to kill most of the ambient light.
Equipment
It was shot on a Canon 6D and my canon 85mm F1.8. The speedlight I used was a cheap yongnuo speedlight in a neewer softbox so no expensive equiment was used here.
Inspiration
I bought the colored powder a while back and waiting for a chance to use it. On this photoshoot, we just went with the flow. After a few different themes I just asked her if she wanted things to get messy, she said yes so we just did it without thinking about it that much.
Editing
The post processing was actually really simple here, I just played with vibrance and saturation and a little contrast in lightroom and that's it. The cool thing about pigments used that way is that you don't have anything to fix in photoshop if the skin is covered enough... :)
In my camera bag
I always have my 85mm F1.8 from Canon, a 50mm F1.4 (yongnuo) and my tamron macro lens (90mm F2.8. I have a speed light with triggers in case I need off camera flash. Depending of what I shoot, I may add my 70-200 F2.8 in the bag.
Feedback
Think about complementary colors ! While playing with pigments or paint, just think about the colors you use and a chromatic wheel will help you determine which colors work well together. Also, have fun doing it and an assistant can be helpful do deal with the powders, so you don't put to much of it on your camera and lens !
