Behind The Lens

Location

This image was captured during a photo event featuring Greg Gorman at the Betty Oliphant Theatre in Toronto a few years back. I had access to the stage as I was shooting behind the scenes for the event so I was able to get in relatively close to the action.

Time

The event ran for a few hours during the afternoon, but because of it being indoors and in a theatre, the time of day, weather elements, natural light, etc. had no bearing on the end result.

Lighting

The lighting was all provided by what was on stage at the time, basically a couple of Rotolight Anova Pro LED Lights (normally used for video applications, but are also amazing for photography) and possibly a Rotolight NEO II as well.

Equipment

This image was captured handheld using a Sony a7R III with a Sony 70-200mm f/2.8 lens mounted. Lighting was provided by what was already on stage illuminating the dancer.

Inspiration

I really liked the pose the model was in as well as the Rembrandt style lighting it created from the angle I was shooting from.

Editing

Basic post-processing using a combination of Capture One and Photoshop to make sure the levels, whites and blacks, were balanced to where I wanted them.

In my camera bag

I normally carry my Canon DSLR with me, but because this event was also sponsored by Sony, I was offered the opportunity to make use of one of their cameras and lenses.

Feedback

Nothing other than to take any opportunity you get and take advantage of local photography events or clubs. It's a lot easier to capture great images, when the hard work of finding a model and setting up lighting is all done for you!
