Behind The Lens

Location

This shot was taken at a BnB I used to live in when I did my BA Degree a few years back. The woman who owned it was on the same course so gave me permission to use the large window, the subject was a friend who also lived at the BnB. We found it hard to communicate so we used our phones which we then incorporated into the final shot.

Time

Due to the type of lighting, we waited until around 8 pm to photograph this but had to be very quiet as another BnB guest used to go to sleep early.

Lighting

For the lighting in this image I use two small flashguns, they are my favourite pieces of lighting equipment to use. I cover them with a coloured gel creating the dramatic scene.

Equipment

This was shot on a Canon EOS 5d Mark ii, with two small flash guns wirelessly connected to the trigger.

Inspiration

As I was doing my degree at the time, I was looking for places that already had a unique feel to them to create images for my final show. This window was the largest in the house but also on the second floor, so giving the look of open space but also not showing a lot of the interior to distract from the subject.

Editing

With these types of setups, I don't do too much in post as so much is given on camera. However, I did slight colour adjustments make the red pop a bit more than in the raw shot.

In my camera bag

My camera bag consists of; two Yongnuo flashguns, 2 Neewer wireless triggers, Canon 5D Mark ii, 24-70 sigma lens, 55-200mm lens and a 50mm lens. I feel this equipment ensures I've got my basic needs covered.

Feedback

The most difficult aspect of getting this shot was placing the flashguns, but it really is all about experimentation with them. It usually takes me at least 5 minutes to have them in the right position so don't pressure yourself to get them in the right place the first shot.
