Location
The photo was taken at a stretch of beach sand, called "Die Plaat" at Struisbaai, a fisherman's town 4 kilometers from Agulhas, the most southern Point of Africa.Time
It was very late in the afternoon, not far from sunset - on a December holiday which I can not remember which year now.Lighting
I was a bit disappointed about the fact that there was not clouds in the sky to include in the shot. I therefore decided to work with the smallish dune in front of the boat as part of the foreground, and luckily the last rays of the sun gave a good contrast to the ripples of the sand.Equipment
I was using a Ninon D700, and if I remember correctely a 24-70 Nikon lens. A sturdy tripod was the other piece of equipment.Inspiration
This boat have a bit of an emotional effect on me since I first found it. It once was the proud provider of food to an owner, and I can not understand why it was stranded on this piece of sandy beach. in the mean time I got hold of the story of this boat called the Glory May, and its first owner, it was then sold to someone else in Struisbaai after it was actually used on the western side of the South African coast. I could not get hold of why this new owner abandoned it. Once a proud vessel, just forgotten and left to rot - inspired me to try and bring back some respect and glory to it.Editing
I was fairly new to photography when I took this photo and whilst taking all my pictures in Raw, I used a bit of photoshop basics to bring out the colors hidden in the Raw file.In my camera bag
I firstly see myself as a wildlife and bird photographer, but when not doing that type of photography, I try to be creative with landscapes. Nowadays I have the Nikon D5 in my bag, the 24-70mm lens, as wel as the wide angle lens of Nikon, also the 70-200 in my landscape bag. I have some Lee filters to play with and also make use of a cable release. Always keep a fibre cloth with me also to keep the lenses clean.Feedback
I nearly always find that when I go out looking for something, I get something! If you sit at home, you will not get it! A strong foreground, is always a priority, leading lines, and then the time of day play a big role. This picture is quite flat and there was not a lot of height to work with. I am glad that my decision to move a bit further, lower my lens to the foreground and thus pushing the horizon way up did work out well.
