This photo was taken at Lake McDonald, Glacier National Park, USATime
This was one of my favourite images from our trip to Glacier National Park. There was a very strong Aurora forecast night before and we were waiting at the lake shore in anticipation, to get a glimpse of the magical northern light. Well, that didn't happen even though we waited for the whole night until sunrise. All of our disappointment quickly disappeared when we saw some nice clouds in the sky and correctly predicted a fiery Sunrise. The sky lit with full glory and an amazing sunrise made us forget the sadness about not catching the glimpse of Northern Lights. I told myself "Life is like a box of chocolate, You never know what you're gonna get"Lighting
The Lighting was so beautiful, and we were so mesmerized that we didn't have to think much about composition. The lined up boats worked perfectly as a foreground and draw the eyes towards the horizon. A boat was floating some distance which helped to create a sense of fulfillment and fill the void of the huge lake, which would other wise be perceived as a mundane lake. But, the angular soft golden sunlight is really the main thing which popped up the sceneEquipment
This was shot with Ninkon D750 with a Nikon 24-120mm Lens placed on top of a Sirui ET2204 Tripod.Inspiration
After a whole night of waiting to get a glimpse of Aurora, I was kind of disheartened but then when the dawn started to lit up the horizon, I spotted some nice patterned cloud over the sky. I told myself this is going to be a beautiful sunrise... and it really was. The weather was calm, almost no breeze and the temperature was perfect. The scene was all set for a drama which nature was about to unfold.Editing
I usually do decent amount of post-processing for all of my photos as it is very necessary for Landscape Photography. But this particular shot (and a few like this) are so well-lit that it barely requires a little touch-up. Right after finishing the shot, I knew that I don't have to do much post processing for this shot. The scene was so beautiful, that I didn't want to do much processing and tried to maintain it's all natural feel.In my camera bag
Being a landscape photographer, I always carry my Nikon D750 and Nikon 18-35mm wide-angle lens and a 14mm Lens. Sometimes, I also carry the Nikon 24-120mm kit lens as well (as an example, for this instance), especially when I am not planning to do long hike. Apart for the Camera and Lenses, I also carry a Circular Polarizer, an Intervelometer, a 10-stop LEE Big Stopper ND Filter and of course the Lens wipes. I carry my tripod separately and don not attach with my camera bag.Feedback
I believe every photograph is unique.... especially in Landscape Photography. Nobody can predict nature. Even when it seems that, there is no hope or opportunity for a good photo, Nature can always present itself in it's ultimate glory all of a sudden. That is what happened to us in this case. Planning is very important in landscape photography but so is patience. If you plan to capture something specific but nature doesn't cooperate, don't loose hope. Keep patience and in most cases it would work out.
