This is another shot from a recent low-key session with local model Sabrina Gamble. We shot in my in-home studio trying a few different looks and wardrobe changes. This one was shot with a single monolight, remotely fired through a 77" white umbrella.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was shot in my in-home studio in Orlando, Florida, USA, as part of a time-for-portfolio collaboration with the model.

Time

I really don't remember what time of day this was taken, since we were indoors with no windows. Most likely, it was early afternoon, as that was a good time to meet up.

Lighting

I love low-key photography, especially when I get to work with beautiful models. I like the challenge of shaping it around their features and using it to accentuate what I see. The big challenge with this shot was to keep her long hair out of the shot on the shadowed side of her face so that it didn't disrupt the movement from light to dark.

Equipment

I shot this with a Pentax K-1 and my favorite portrait lens, the Sigma 85mm f/1.4. I shot it handheld, and lit it with a remotely fired Alien Bee's B800 fired through a white shoot-thru umbrella.

Inspiration

Beauty inspires me, but so does darkness. When I met Sabrina, I knew I wanted to photograph her in my low-key style. The contrast between her light hair and the darkness would make for a stunning image.

Editing

Yes, but it was minimal: skin smoothing, and adjusting the levels to make sure the blacks were dark, but the eyes and skin were plainly visible.

In my camera bag

My walking around kit is my K-1 with the Pentax 24-70 f/2.8 lens, and a Godox V1 flash and remote trigger.

Feedback

The tip to good low-key portrait work is having good control of your light. I find a good diffuser, whether its a modifer on the flash or an umbrella, is essential. But the key is to test different diffusers to find out which one creates the best effects for your style.
