Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Mystic Beach on Vancouver Island, Canada. There were so many beautiful things to take photos of. What a wonderful location!

Time

This was such a bright, beautiful day for hiking out to the beach. I hiked out, had my lunch, and then started taking photos. This was taken around mid-afternoon. The cliff side was in the shadows, but the sky was so bright, making it hard to expose.

Lighting

I wanted to capture the bright blue sky, but still get some of the details of the cliff side and moss. I really liked how the rock had be worn away, exposing layers of different compositions and the moss growing on the cliff side.

Equipment

I shot this was a Canon XSi, 18-55mm lens with a polarizing filter. I didn't use any other equipment, though I wish I had my tripod with me.

Inspiration

Just a beautiful scene that I wanted take a photo of and hopefully do it justice. I really was trying to capture the scale of the cliffside and the perspective of the erosion that had occurred.

Editing

Yes, I had to lighten the shadows of the cliffside to enable the textures and colours to be seen better.

In my camera bag

My camera, flash, 18-55mm and 50mm lense and polarizing filter.

Feedback

Position yourself up against the cliffside as much as you can to capture the scale of the subject.
