Location
I took this photo at a field near my house. I’ve been wanting to shoot this tree for awhile because it has so much character.Time
This was around 10-11pm at night when the full moon was relatively low on the horizon.Lighting
It was cold! Come prepared with clothing so you don’t get cold, let your camera climatize to the cold temperature, and bring a flashlight.Equipment
I used a Canon 7d mkii, a 16-55mm lens and my tripod. I didn’t use a flash or fill lighting.Inspiration
I was looking to get a full moon photo with fresh snow to get the sparkle of the moon in the snow. The tree provided some dramatic shadows.Editing
I did some post processing, mostly in the exposures to reduce the highlights to bring out some details and bring up the shadows. I also did some slight colour corrections. In my camera bag
I sometimes find I pack too much in my bag, but when I take something out I wish I had it! Other than my general camera gear I have a 16-55mm lens that I use frequently. I also include a 50-250mm zoom and a 50mm prime. I bring along spare batteries and memory cards, lens cleaners, flashlight and flash. I always bring a bottle of water too and sunscreen if I’m out during the day.Feedback
Watch the moon cycles, see where it will be at certain times of the evening and plan what features you want in the shot. Then be prepared to go take the shot when the weather and sky are cooperating!
