Location
My wife's family luckily lives on a farm in the Northern Neck area of Virginia. A mother and her kits/cubs made an abandoned barn their home.Time
The foxes were most active for an hour after sunrise and before sunset. So a couple of times, I camped out in my car near their "home" and hoped they would come out to play.Lighting
Lighting was pretty boring because of overcast clouds, but I think it made the fur look softer.Equipment
I shot this with a Canon 5DSR, a Canon 100-400L II, and a Buick Enclave (tripod, or quadpod?).Inspiration
I am fortunate that when we visit my wife's family, that we get access to animals we do not see a few miles in the suburbs. I could not tell you the last time I saw a fox, and was thrilled to learn not only had a mother moved into the abandoned barn, but she had a bunch of pups too. I camped out around sunrise/sunset on our brief visit and lucked out. In this case, the mother had chased after the dad (who provides them food) and one of the pups followed her ... which brought it right in front of the car - ready for her closeup.Editing
I use Capture One for processing, the only notable thing I did was make the color of the fur and the grass a bit more uniform. In my camera bag
Wildlife is something I enjoy, but not something I photograph very often. What I carry varies based on what photography I am doing. I would consider this a travel trip, so my usual equipment includes what was used for this shot (well, minus the Buick ... that one doesn't fit in a carry-on) as well as a Canon 11-24L (my favorite lens), DJI Mavic Pro 2, and a Canon 7D Mark II (backup camera).Feedback
Wildlife is a combination of patience and luck. The only way to reduce the need for patience and increase your luck is knowledge. I was very fortunate that I knew the family of foxes lived in a spot and since my family lived nearby, they also knew when the foxes would be the most active. The best part, they have better cell phone photos than I do of the foxes ... they have caught then in the golden hour, and the results are spectacular.
