Bark beetles [Dendroctonus ponderosae in Western US forests] lay eggs under the bark of conifer trees. The eggs hatch into the larval stage, which are worm-like "grubs." The larvae tunnel through the inner bark, and in so doing also mine through the outer layer of wood. They can invisibly "girdle" a tree by completely removing all pathways of the trees' conductive tissues. Eventually, when the tree dies or is harvested, and the bark is removed, the series of tunnels are shown on the surface of the wood.
