Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the Baldwin Hills scenic overlook in Los Angeles as a car was driving up the hill.

Time

It’s was around 9pm. I wanted to make sure it was dark enough so I could experiment with long exposures on film. I studied film and photography in college and wanted to get back to the process of shooting and scanning negatives. I kind of use the results and process to help train my digital eye. As a result I’ve changed my style of digital photography from a very post heavy workflow to a mostly in camera approach.

Lighting

Light along with everything else tends to be more saturated with longer exposures.

Equipment

This was shot with a Nikon Nikon n90s 35mm Kodak Ektar 100. Nikkor 50mm 1.4 at f4. On a cheap travel tripod with a cable release using a 30 second exposure time.

Inspiration

I wanted to see how the ektar 100 captured colors at night. The sky came out much greener than how i remember it on the day. That’s actually all smog and light pollution from the city.

Editing

Just a basic levels pass.

Feedback

Working with film can slow you down in a good way. Be patient. Get there early. Play around.
