Behind The Lens

Location

New Orleans is home to the Audobon Society which has the zoo, aquarium and Insectarium which is home to a butterfly room.

Time

This was an inside shot, time of day is not relevant

Lighting

A soft light filters in from several windows that line the front of the Insectarium. The butterflies can be seen from the outside for those passing by. My shot, inside.

Equipment

I use exclusively my Nikon D5300 with either my Tamron 18-400 or Nikon Macro. This shot, macro.

Inspiration

I love the details in nature. Butterflies are plentiful in the Insectarium so there's always the opportunity to get a great shot.

Editing

The post-processing is called selective color. The wings were a bit frayed looking so a switch to B&W was a big improvement. The flowers were an odd color that didn't enhance the butterfly so B&W was the best choice.

In my camera bag

One camera, my only, Nikon D5300. Lens, 2, Tamron 18-400 definitely and often my Nikon macro.

Feedback

If the elements of your shot do not compliment one another, try B&W. By making this change you will add a oneness to the shot that emphasizes the shapes. Lastly, look over your colors and try different selective colors and see if any add to the B&W edited image. You may be pleasantly surprised1
