Behind The Lens

Location

This photo of Lucy (L) and Reno (R), both barn cats, was taken on the horse farm we live on. Every morning, they follow me out to feed the horses and would always play atop the hay. I decided to bring my camera one morning.

Time

I took this about 7:45 in the morning and they are actually looking towards the rising sun. They were distracted by something in the adjacent field and I just kept snapping away.

Lighting

The sun, once it comes over the Sangre de Cristo mountain range gives glorious light.

Equipment

This was shot with my Nikon D3100 on an 18-55mm lens, no tripod or flash.

Inspiration

Lucy (L) is one of the most photogenic cats I have ever filmed. This day, her brother Reno joined us as I snapped away.

Editing

I did not have to do any post processing on this photo.

In my camera bag

I am a novice photog, so I have my basic Nikon D3100 with a 18-55 mm lens and also carry a Cannon Power Shot SX 100IS which takes amazing pictures and video. The 10X optical zoom comes in very handy!

Feedback

Lighting on these types of pictures is key and nothing better than natural lighting. On clear days, such as when this picture was taken, those blue skies pop out even more. Next is to have great models, and for barn cats, these guys are pretty good about being still for pics. I was lucky on this picture as they were clearly looking at something in the field across from us.
