Location
This photo was taken on a ferry ride to a small island in Thailand. This is the front of the ferry, of course.Time
This was probably late morning if I recall.Lighting
Because it was a cloudy day and I realized that with the flat lighting this would be sure to be a crisp picture without harsh shadow. It was only after when I looked at the picture that I realized that the clouds contributed their own interest to the overall picture. This picture is unretouched in any way other than I made the white band 10% lighter.Equipment
I used an iPhone 5s, hand held.Inspiration
This was a very spontaneous picture. I was sitting at the bow of the boat watching as we approached the island and realized that if I took a closely cropped picture that it would likely turn out quite well. I also realized that the ribbons were new that day or very recently and therefore would make for very crisp colours. I enjoy taking pictures of closely cropped portions of larger objects, especially boats and maritime items. The coloured ribbons/sheets looked brand new. I was sitting at the bow of the boat watching as we approached the island. Then I looked at those fresh ribbons and thought they would make a great picture. The colours are also the colours of the Dutch Flag and being of Dutch decent that also attracted my attention. Plus those strange little cartoon like pictures at the very top that are either Thai Royalty or something else.Editing
The only post processing work I did was to lighten the white band 10%. I believe I also rotated the image a couple of degrees to bring the boat portion closer to vertical. Again, 2-4 degrees at most. I also believe I cropped it in from the sides slightly. In my camera bag
I normally have an Olympus OM D E-M10III with various lenses. This picture was taken with an iPhone 5s. Very spontaneously.Feedback
This was a very spontaneous picture. I try to look for interesting shapes/colours/forms that are portions of larger objects. So that the eye focuses on the closely cropped detail and less on the larger object as a whole. So I suppose I am elevating the detail to be the main subject of the photo is another way of saying it. As this picture demonstrates, it is better to take the picture regardless of equipment available then to not having taken the picture. In this case I used my iPhone which is now 6 models out of date!!
