Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at one of my favourite places in New Zealand. Lake Wakatipu basically is a photographers dream. On the road between Queenstown and Glenorchy there is only pure beauty to see.

Time

After a day of shooting the still lake with mountains perfectly mirroring in the water, this sunset was amazingly colourful. The reflexion of the sunset colours in the water made it a spectacular sight.

Lighting

I wanted to have to rocks in the water seen, so I had to make sure there was enough light to get those, but still wanted to keep the intense red colours of the sky that I was visually.

Equipment

I used a tripod because I had quite a low shutter speed. Or no now I am thinking about it, I took it off my tripod and used a self built construction with rocks to get the low perspective I wanted.

Inspiration

I remember seeing a picture where the rocks in the water where perfect. I had the picture in mind as soon as I saw this beautiful place. I never had seen water this clear in my life and now I had the opportunity, I wanted to make a show like this.

Editing

I altered the high light a little, since I wanted enough lights to get the rocks, the rest of the photo was a bit to light for me. I still wanted the warm red colours I saw on this beautiful summers eve.

In my camera bag

I usually go for my tripod and since I only have one lens there is not much more than a spare battery.

Feedback

Try out different angles. Everybody has seen great sunsets, but beautiful colours in the sky aren’t always enough to make a memorable picture, composition is important too!
