Behind The Lens

Location

I took this picture during my interrail trip through Europe in the summer of 2015. The Teufelsberg in Berlin, where this picture was taken, is one of the greatest places I´ve ever been. As a big fan of street art and photography this place is a Walhalla to combine the two. This old wall-less building used to be a NSA listening station and is nowadays a big graffiti art gallery with an enormous historical background. The boy in the red raincoat takes part in the small grouped tour with his dad. Not as interested in the place as his father was, he wandered around here and there in the big rain puddles. The contrast of the inocent little boy with this big`scarry`monster in the background made me take this picture. Also the colours and the effect of the reflection in the water made this a great photo opportunity.

Time

Beside the, otherwise also great place, the huge amount of rain that fell earlier this day, made the buidling and the art more special. Many of my pictures are taken with a crazy reflection in the water puddles. My walk through the woods to get here was an adventure on its own. First I got lost, then a massive amount of rain was falling and to top it al off, a thunderstorm with lightning all around came along (and I walked on an open field at this time). When I finally found the place it stopped raining and the sun started to show a little. Right on time to start with the tour around 13.00 - Photo taken on Sunday 19 July 2015 13:52

Lighting

Since the building had an open structure (only the fundation was still there, no walls or anything) there was plenty of daylight. I had no photography equipement at the time, so I actually took the photo with my Sony Camera phone. I didnt use any flash and just tried to get the correct light by changing my ISO-settings.

Equipment

Sony Xperia Z3 Compact Camera Phone, No Flash. 1/100 sec. f/2 4,6 mm

Inspiration

Especially the fact that it really looks like the boy had no clue there was a monster trying to scare him away right behind him. The graffiti is very colourfull and still the boy in the red raincoat stands out. He was wandering through the building, looking a bit borred sometimes, while in fact, as shown on the background, there was absolutely no reason to be borred at all. Also the place where the boy stood, in the rain water on the ground, made me see a great photo opportunity.

Editing

There was a little too much light coming from the outside window, so I narrowed that down a bit. Also I made the colours and the red coat just a little bit stand out more than it already did.

In my camera bag

During this trip the only photography equipement I brought was my phone. Nowadays I bring my Nikon D7200 with a fine allround 16-300mm lens. I also like to bring my tripod, extra memory cards and batteries and if I go on a backpacking trip I take a small action camera.

Feedback

If you are in a place like this, the art already is increadible. But this is someone elses art. To just make a photo of their graffiti isn't what photography is about. It is the setting, weather, weird objects or people that are there in a specific moment, that make your pictures special. I can highly recommend to go to this place on a rainy day, to be able to create great pictures with the rain puddles. You can use this to make your pictures special and show your own artistic and creative skills.
