Location
Taken locally (in UK) at a St George's Day event where there is a medieval enactment group. Whole families live the medieval lifestyle, cooking, sleeping, fighting. Consists of men at arms and various trades people.Time
Late morning. Variable cloud cover with sunny spells.Lighting
As the participants live in tents with awnings the canvas gives a lovely diffused light.Equipment
Pentax K3ii with Sigma 17 to 70mm lens.. I use aperture priority and centre weighted exposure.Inspiration
I have attended event last three years so have an idea of what I want to photograph. Usually character shots of which a few are in my gallery. I spend time chatting to the people before asking if OK to take pictures. For this one I explained that I like taking hand shots and could he draw his longbow back. The longbow is an important part of English history, the WMD of its time. Ask the French whose heavily armoured knights were no match for the masses English archers. Any archer captured by them had their two fingers that pull the bow cut off. This led to the archers taunting the French with the V sign. Has a different meaning now! Enough of the history lesson. .Editing
Yes love using Photoshop and NIK silver to convert to monochrome. In my camera bag
Just my camera plus above lens and 70 to 300 lens. Spare batteries and cards. Travel light when possible. You can carry too much equipment at times and I know what I need for this event.Feedback
Talk to people and listen to what they say. The participants of these enent are passionate about what they do and love talking about it with you. It helps if you also have a love of histiry and have some knowledge of period yourself.
