My objective was to combine a series of related images to convey a message about transportation to New South Wales in the 19th century.
In my collection I have a period padlock, key, Van Diemen’s Land map and convict log – all replicas – all elements that I wished to include in my compilation.
I photographed the map separately using my 100 mm macro lens. This allowed me to import it as a separate layer allowing me to manoeuvre it into a suitable position.
The padlock and key were positioned on the copy of the convicts’ log, allowing details of the log to be visible to reinforce the impending story. Of course, each of these elements have been placed on the diagonal creating a juxtaposition of each element.
