Shooting in the middle of the day in bright contrasty conditions are always a challenge for photographers. It makes you explore other opportunities. Given the conditions, I chose to hone in on the detail of this military parade.
Taken at Liverpool Regional Museum where the Australian Army Forces Re-Enactment Unit performed military drills for the public.
Already having my 70-200 mm lens on the camera, I chose to shoot some details of the military parade. Working around buildings, members of the public, etc, I placed myself in a position where the background provided a repetition of military personnel. Using aperture priority to control the depth of field, I chose f-4 so the background was rendered out of focus, however, identifiable. Exposure compensation was also a consideration due to the contrasty conditions. Selecting a single focus point, I focussed on the hands resting on the butt of the rifle (a period 303 Enfield for those gun enthusiasts).
