Behind The Lens

Location

I took this picture while on a trip to Boston. Me and my wife were walking around the downtown area and saw how well the buildings all lined up. We don't have these type of buildings in Augusta Georgia so this was a real treat for me.

Time

I took this picture in the evening around 5PM. I'm still pretty new to photography so I tend to break the rules and snap pictures all day long. I was told that getting up early in the morning or getting out pretty late in the day give great pictures but in my mind, pictures are art and no one can set parameters around that.

Lighting

Most of my shots are shot in natural light and this photo is no different. I also take full advantage of filters and Lightroom to make the picture pop the way I envisioned. This particular picture I fill like I got extremely lucky. It's without a doubt my best photo yet.

Equipment

I currently use the Canon 80D with 10-18MM Kit lens

Inspiration

I have only been taking photos for about 8 months so every day is an inspiration for a photo. Walking around a beautiful city like Boston its hard not to get slapped in the face with inspiration. There is so much architecture as well as things that are going on in the streets that it would be a waste not to take out a camera and capture the moment.

Editing

I tend to gravitate towards Lightroom as most photographers do. In this particular picture I used a filter in Instagram. Sometimes it just that simple. Some may say that using a filter is cheating, but I say why not use the tools that are in front of you instead of making things difficult. I do use Lightroom for most photos but I saw this Instagram filter and I had to have it.

In my camera bag

My Canon 80D with a wide angle and a nifty 50 is what I carry on me at all times. The 80D is my first camera. Once I really start to pin down my technique, I will most likely move to a full frame camera.

Feedback

Take pictures all the time. practicing your craft is the only way you get better. I have been doing this for less than a year and have failed on multiple occasions to get the shot I wanted. I make it a point to learn something new about photography every week and apply it. The more you learn the better off you are. Experimenting is also a good recipe for success. There are going to be people that insist that you're doing something wrong, but like I said before Your pictures are art. No one can tell you how to create it. It comes from within.
