Location
The photo was taken in the Great Torii of Itsukushima shrine in Miyajima Island, during my 2 weeks trip around Japan.Time
The shot was taken before sunset. I planned it at home in Spain, so in order to check if my calculations were right I decided to do a first visit early in the afternoon. Then I came back to the place 1 hour before I had to shoot, because I expected many people there to see the sunset. I was right, so going with enough time was crucial because it allowed me to place my tripod exactly where I wanted. And this was the only place where you could watch the Sun right in the center of the Great Torii.Lighting
It was very cloudy and for a while I thought we couldn't see the Sun. Fortunately it appeared for a few minutes before hiding again behind the mountains.Equipment
This was shot on a Nikon D610 with a Tamron 24-70mm F/2.8 VC (first version) mounted on a Horusbennu tripod, a Haida 6 stops ND filter and an intervalometer.Inspiration
The Great Torii is an icon for the japanese nation, and it is a place where you can feel the calm in the environment. This calm was what I wanted to transmit with my picture. This shot was not taken at sunrise, but I decided to include the Sun in the frame as a tribute to Japan as the country of the rising sun. And I decided to place it right in the center of the Great Torii to enhance its importance as a sacred symbol.Editing
I am one of those who think that without post-processing a picture is unfinished (at least in landscape photography). Firstly I did minor adjustments with Lightroom, then I moved to Photoshop to give it my personal touch trying to make it more moody helped by Luminar filters and luminosity masks. In my camera bag
I always put in my bag my Full Frame camera (now is a Nikon D750), a standard zoom with which I make most of my photos (Tamron 24-70mm F/2.8 VC), a wide angle (Tamron 15-30mm F/2.8 VC) and a prime lens (sometimes Nikkor 35mm AF-D F/2 and other times Nikkor 50mm AF-S G F/1.8). I also put my Horusbennu tripod, which is very light and compact for travel, my filter system (Haida CPL, ND 6 stops and ND 10 stops) and the intervalometer.Feedback
As you can see, plan everything in advance was crucial to let me take the shot I wanted. So think the things before, go in advance to the location and then just enjoy of the place :-)
