Behind The Lens

Location

Grand Prix of Long Beach 2018, downtown Long Beach California, Turn 1

Time

This was shot at 8:20 in the morning during the morning warm ups.

Lighting

It was a beautiful morning, bright and sunny

Equipment

Canon 1Dx using Canon 100-400L

Inspiration

Taking racing photos is the hardest photography I have done. This was shot at 1/160 sec of a car doing over 70 miles per hour. You need to have the driver tack sharp and the background and tires blurred. It is a test of panning skill.

Editing

Basic post processing of sharpening and working the levels.

In my camera bag

I now carry a Canon R5 with 100-500:. Canon 7D with 400 DO and 1.4x and a Canon 90D with 70-200 L II

Feedback

Be prepared to get, if lucky about 3 shots out of 100 that are perfect. Panning at shutter speeds, close up, of 1/125 to 1/160 sec is a matter of taking thousands of shots and hoping for the best. My back was killing me after just a few hours of turning and twisting at the cars. I was trackside, so I was very close the the cars as they whizzed by.
