Behind The Lens

Location

These falls are located in Victoria. I was on my home after spending time on the great ocean road. I did my research and found two falls in the area. From the car park it was about 1 kilometre walk downhill to the falls. There was an observation platform to set my tripod on.

Time

It was around noon which normally is not the best light. However, it was raining and overcast. I knew the shot would be a long exposure so I was not too concerned.

Lighting

As mentioned above it was overcast and raining. I brought an umbrella to keep my camera dry while taking the shot.

Equipment

Nikon D850 with a Sigma Art 35mm 1.4 lens. 20 second exposure at f-11 on a Manfrotto tripod.

Inspiration

I love images of moving water such as waterfalls and employing a long exposure to get the effect of long strands of hair. For this shot I experimented with various f-stops and ISO settings until I got the desired results. I love a good challenge.

Editing

Yes, I cleaned up a lot of dead, brown leaves and cloned in a few green leaves. I pumped up the whites to enhance the water because there was no sunlight to naturally light it. I increased the clarity and contrast slightly.

In my camera bag

D850, 14-24mm, 35mm, 50mm, 105mm, 70-200mm, 1.4 teleconverter. Speedlight SB600, shutter release, filter kit and Pluto device plus cleaning brushes and wipes.

Feedback

Just take your time and experiment with different settings until you get the results you desire. Never be afraid to try different things.
