Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken in a beautiful nature reserve in South Africa. We we're just driving around to pass some time. Luckily my camera was in the car. And as this pic proves you never know when a picture worthy moment might occur.

Time

I love this pic because I was not expecting to take it. I was driving around to pass some time in the nature reserve around 16:00. I love being in nature in the late afternoon, everything seems to just calm down around this time. And the true serenity shows itself.

Lighting

As this pic was taken in the late afternoon, the light was getting pretty low pretty fast. And I had to choose between a higher ISO, a longer exposure time, or a wider aperture. I knew I wanted some of the antelope in the background to be blurred. As to let the middle one stand out more, and give the image more depth. Luckily they're all laying still so I could use a longer exposure.

Equipment

I used my trusty Canon 6D with a Canon 100-400 IS USM L lens. No flash I did use my car door as a makeshift tripod though.

Inspiration

I wasn't planning on taking any pictures at that time because of the fading light. But when I saw them just chilling in the mud, i thought it showed the tranquility of nature.

Editing

Apart from basic contrast and saturation adjustment not much was done. I did increase the exposure of the shadows slightly as it was late afternoon when i took the image. Another reason i always soot in RAW.

In my camera bag

I manly use 1 camra body a Canon 6D. Then I have my 17-40mm L, a 100mm macro and of course a nifty 50. In my bag i also have the charger for my camra, a spare memory card a pocket knife and a small towel(its come in handy more than you think)

Feedback

Well im not a expert in photography but i think its important for a images to have some depth. Not all the antelope in the picture are in focus, but thy dont gave to be to tell the story. And always have your camera around u never know when a picture will reveal itself.
