Winter sunrise on the shore of Lake Superior near Two Harbors, Minnesota!Time
I love walking the shore of Lake Superior from dawn on in all seasons. This Winter sunrise is spectacular because of the reflection through the hanging icicles of my neighbor’s stairway to the beach! Winter ice is created when the waves crash over rocks and stairs and freezes as it drips off. It is usually here for a couple of days and then it is gone!Lighting
Morning and afternoon light has a special golden hue that can not be gotten at any other time of the day! It’s called the “Golden Hour” for a reason!Equipment
Nikon D7100 with a Tamron 16-300mm zoom and UV filter. Settings were 1/100 sec at f11 iso 200 18 mm. I used a tripod with a remote shutter release.Inspiration
I saw the hanging ice at Dawn when I came down to the beach to walk the shore. I kept coming back to it as the light changed. I took 882 photos that morning of different ice formations but I kept coming back to this position until the sun came up. I am wedged into the large stones of the beach wall so I could get the light coming through the icicles!Editing
Post processing was done in Lightroom and Photoshop! There is too much difference in the light in a photo like this so the camera can not balance the light and dark areas. Processing brings out the full dynamic range of the photo. In my camera bag
I don’t carry any bag on the beach. That’s why I was using my walk around Tamron 16-300mm. You never know what you will run into.Feedback
Get outside to experience the early morning! You don’t get any great shots sitting at the Breakfast table or watching TV.
