Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on a cold January afternoon spent walking around the streets of Paris.

Time

After a hot cup of coffee on a nearby terrace, I walked up to the Arc Du Triomphe and placed my tripod next to the road, so I could get the Arc du Triomphe, but also the light trails of the cars' lights passing by.

Lighting

I decided to use the street lamps and the cars to light the long exposure shot.

Equipment

This was shot on a Canon 600D, an 18-55mm lens, and a tripod to get the light trails of the cars driving around the monument.

Inspiration

I liked how the Arc Du Triomphe looked in the blue light of the evening and how the cars were lighting it, so I just went for it. There wasn't much more thinking behind it than that.

Editing

I did a bit of post-processing in Lightroom, where I mostly tweaked the white balance and tried different values for the orange and blue tones.

In my camera bag

I'm not a professional photographer, so I most normally have my newly bought camera, a Canon 6D mark II and both of my lenses (a 50mm and a 70-200mm). I also take my tripod with me if I have enough space in my bag and if I plan on taking long exposures or a lot of pictures at night, but that's something that doesn't always happen. I'll hopefully get my hands on a 24-70mm soon, but for now, this is what's in my camera bag.

Feedback

Just go for it. There's absolutely no risk and nothing to lose, and you can end up with something that's pretty cool.
