Behind The Lens

Location

This is the lighthouse in Sodus Point NY, on Lake Ontario. A very popular spot for photographers on a windy day. There's just something about this pier and/or shoreline that creates some spectacular splashes.

Time

I took this photo on a very windy March 16th 2018 at 4:16 PM.

Lighting

It's just natural afternoon lighting coming from the left side. I was facing North when I took the photo.

Equipment

I used my Canon 40D with my Sigma 150-600mm lens at 150mm. Handheld.

Inspiration

I was inspired by the waves crashing into the pier.

Editing

Most of the post-processing I did was to compensate for the image being underexposed. I wanted to freeze the waves with a faster shutter speed as much as I could, but that meant underexposing the photo quite a bit.

In my camera bag

Lately I've been carrying my Canon Rebel SL1 with a Canon 50mm f/1.4, Canon 10-18mm, Sigma 18-300mm, Sigma 150-600mm, and a Canon 100mm f/2.8.

Feedback

Find out where other photographers go to shoot waves or find a spot on your own. Wait for a big gust of wind and start shooting. Take a lot of shots, each one will be different. Shutter speed is critical here. Faster is better, but don't be afraid to experiment with slower shutter speeds too.
