Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at home on the dining room table, which just happens to be a dark wood finish that reflects well. The backdrop was a black sheet that I scrunched up and draped around the back of the rose.

Time

My eldest daughter had just got home from work bringing in a gorgeous bunch of yellow roses, that would have been about 6pm so this photo would have been taken after dinner, about 8pm. I remember thinking that I really wanted to get the reflection in, nice and steady. So I used the table as the tripod. Lined up the shot and clicked away.

Lighting

I just used the normal lighting in the dining room and the camera flash. I did move around a little to get what I wanted.

Equipment

This was shot using a Nikon D3300 with the 188.0-55.0 mm f/3.5-5.6 lens. The flash was on, I shot in raw, ISO 320 f4.5 1/60.

Inspiration

I've always loved roses, plenty of childhood memories come to mind just typing this section, so when a bunch or two make it home, I can't really resist to get the camera out.

Editing

Yes I did do some post-processing, mainly with colour and sharpness but to be honest I didn't do too much to the original.

In my camera bag

I tend to leave my Tamron 18-400mm f/3.5-6.3 on my Nikon D3300 in the bag, it's my go to set up at the moment. I also always carry a Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 and my lens cleaning kit. That leaves enough room for the spare battery, memory card and remote. If I can, the tripod and small stool come along for the ride.

Feedback

Every rose has a uniqueness that you can capture, I looked long and hard at the bunch I had before choosing a couple. I played around with the camera settings and black sheet backdrop to get the look I was looking for - I had some time in between dinner and washing up! So I guess the last bit of advice is seize the moment.
