Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Sydney's Taronga Zoo during a 2 day expedition I did all on my own. I took several hundred in total and this is one of my favourites.

Time

This was taken just after 9.30am - I know that because that's the time the zoo opens and I ran straight to the tigers to beat the school kids in the queue. It was my second day at the zoo, I knew the short cuts and just went for it. I also arrived before the kids and was rewarded with some amazing images.

Lighting

I wanted real definition on his face, there was something even more majestic when he stared straight at me. The early morning natural light was all that I needed.

Equipment

This was shot on a Z6 using a taproom 18-400

Inspiration

Quite simply my love of nature and in particular big cats. Taronga zoo has an amazing area for the tigers, providing unfettered viewing - I'm not going to get that in too many places.

Editing

Very little on this one, a little playing around with contrast and that was basically it

In my camera bag

My Nikon Z6 and D3300, the Nikkor 24-70/4S and tampon 18-400. A cleaning kit and always spare batteries and memory cards. Most times my tripod comes with me but not this time, too much walking!

Feedback

Patience and timing. I had already sussed out where I wanted to be during my first day at the zoo, I'd recommend (if you can) to have a good idea of where you want to be and at what time.
