This is the classic landscape one thinks of when one thinks of Africa and its vast grasslands and bush, the iconic acacia trees rising above the savannah.

The smudge on the horizon is a fire that's been burning for the last couple of days about ten miles away. We watched it closely. There are no planes to drop fire retardant, no fire departments. Just bushmen with tree branches to beat the fire out with. And only at night when there's no wind. It was scary.
