Behind The Lens

Location

I photographed this beautiful little girl at my home studio in Cape Town, South Africa.

Time

It was shot at 12:45 in the afternoon.

Lighting

To light the subject, I used only natural lighting, coming in from the front large arch windows. Fairy lights (warm white) were used on the tree to give that lovely bokeh effect.

Equipment

The camera used was a Nikon D750 and the lens a Tamron 70-200. No artificial lighting was used (other than the fairy lights behind the subject). The settings used were: Aperture: f3.2 ISO: 1600 Shutter Speed: 1/200

Inspiration

I love all things Christmas and decided to try my hand at capturing the bokeh effect made by the fairy lights and decorations that is so popular on advertising and cards during the holiday season.

Editing

Yes, I shoot RAW so some post processing is needed, if nothing else but to save it into a readable format for the client. For this image, I did some minor exposure, white balance, curves and sharpening. I smoothed her skin ever so slightly, she has near perfect skin anyway. I also improved the shape of her hair bun with the help of liquify. The pink of the lollipop was darkened to create a tonal separation between the dress and the sweet.

In my camera bag

I always have two cameras with me on a shoot. My camera bodies are Nikon D800 and D750. My go to lenses are the Nikon 24-70 and the Tamron 70-200. I also have a flash with me with diffuser for moments when natural lighting alone may not be ideal.

Feedback

In order to get the bokeh effect from the Christmas tree, make sure to place the subject quite a distance (in this case around 2-3 meters) away from the tree. Keep the aperture as open as you can. Experiment and have fun!
