Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in Darling Harbour Sydney CBD, on a day when this replica of Captain James Cooks ship The ‘Endeavour’ has come to port and was receiving visitors as a museum piece ...

Time

This was a late morning shot, where the light was still a little cool, and the harbour has a very blue look anyway, but there were few shadows, so you could grasp more actual detail of the ship itself ...

Lighting

There was the blue look to the harbour, and the very bright reflection off all the high story buildings around, plus the sun close to overhead, which took away much of the shadow. But that also allowed a better look at the details of the ship, which was one of the things I was looking for ...

Equipment

We were doing a lot of walking through the city that day and so didn’t want the weight of my Nikon P510, so relied on my iphone camera to capture what I saw. I quite like camera on the iphone to still get the photo that I want, when I can’t take my big camera ...

Inspiration

Editing

Aside from a little sharpening, and bringing the colours as close to what I actually saw on the day, there was very little in the way of post production ...

I usually carry my Nikon Coolpix P510 (good for portrait photography), my Nikon Coolpix P900 (for birds and most other photography), and recently a Canon EOS 4000 (which I’m practicing with), and of course my iPhone, which goes everywhere ...

Feedback

I usually look for whether the lighting is going good or detrimental to my chosen subject, the best angle to get the most perfect shot, how to show and capture my subject to best advantage, and then decide whether the shot is actually worthwhile or not, or whether post processing will make a difference. Sometimes when the shot is important to you then post processing can rescue and repair relatively a hopeless photo relatively well ...
