Location
This shot was taken at the coast of the north sea. I recently got a 14mm lens and was playing around with it the whole day till we discovered this boat in the evening. It was low tide at the time so the boat was sitting on the mudflats a few meters from the shoreline.Time
It was nearing the evening when we discovered this boat after a hike along the mudflats.Lighting
It was luck that the sun hid behind a few small clouds at the time I took the shot. This way the photo got a lot of depth due to the shadows of the low sun but I still was able to shoot with the sun in the frame without overexposing the sky.Equipment
This shot was taken with a Sony A7II and a 14mm lens. It was bright enough to shoot this scene handheld kneeling in the mud.Inspiration
Playing around with the wide angle lens all day I was constantly hunting for interesting foreground elements. After a hike through the amazing mudflats of the north see we were on our way home and saw this boat sitting on the flats. I wanted to capture the structure in the mudflats as well as the boat itself so I shot with the horizon pretty much in the middle of the frame.Editing
The only post processing I usually do is develop the photos in Capture One. The shadows have been brightened a bit to get more detail in the boat and there is a local white balance adjustment near the sun to increase the warm mood of the scene. In my camera bag
Apart from my camera I usually carry an assortment of vintage manual lenses. Most modern lenses have superb quality buck lack a lot of character, so I love shooting with vintage lenses. Sony cameras are perfect for this because you can attach almost any lens to it. Apart from that I usually carry a tripod and an assortment of light since I usually do lightpainting art. But when a scene like this presents itself a simple shot is all it takes to capture the great moment.Feedback
The mudflats of the north sea are great to find lots of scenes like this. The mudflats themselves cover a huge area and sometimes can reach several kilometers into the sea when there is low tide. Please keep in mind that this is a natural reserve so take care when venturing into the mudflats. Also it can be dangerous because of strong micro rivers forming in the sand that can knock a grown man from his feet. If you never been there it is advised to take a tour form the locals to get to know the region better. Other then that I can just say keep your eyes open for great scenes and look at objects from different angles. It is surprising how a scene can change if you look at it from a different angle.
