Behind The Lens
Location
It was taken at the Spring Valley Nature Center & Heritage Farm in Schaumburg IL, just outside the farm area.Time
It was shot in February at 4:39 pm right before the sun was about to set.Lighting
It was nice that the light was so low at the time of the shot because when I was just in the thick of the forest it bounced off the trees to stretch such long shadows across the pathway.Equipment
At the time I shot with a Canon Rebel XS with my kit lens of 35-75mm, I free handed everything and never used a flash.Inspiration
Originally I was taking it for a portfolio class. I wanted to showcase my usage of backgrounds that could be used in portrait photography but this one happened to have stuck with me. I love the lines that you get from the tracks in the snow and how they directly hit and shoot away from the tree trunk. I also can't help but adore all the detail of the path that is forced out because of the wet and snow.Editing
I did do a little post-processing just to pop the shadows a bit because originally the snow was a little brighter. In my camera bag
Now I have a whole new setup. After a lot of saving that old reliable Rebel XS has been replaced by new Canon EOS 1D with a 18-75mm 2.8f lens and a Canon 40D with a telephoto lens until I get the new upgrade. I have an old Flash with a Gery Fong. And a few other odds and ends.Feedback
Your best bet is to go out before the golden hour to scout out a location, you can always sit and wait for that shot but if you miss it, you miss it. Also get yourself a warm jacket and so really good hiking boots. It was a few years ago when I took this photo but I remember it being in the teens and slick out.
