Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at the Lincoln Park Zoo. There is a lion exhibit in the middle entrance.

Time

The time of day as a little after noon

Lighting

The lighting was a result of a cloudy late winter day, the lions have an indoor exhibit but they like to be out side in the snow.

Equipment

At the time I only had my Canon Rebel Eos and a 75-300 lens. I normally don’t use flash for animals and it was a light enough day for free hand.

Inspiration

I love animals and taking animal photos at the local zoos. I just so happen to come across the lions and saw the male sitting on his perch. I wanted to get a photo as realistic as possible without windows or what looked like man made objects and the rocks and vines behind him made that possible and gave an interesting texture.

Editing

I do some post processing. Originally, I had this in color but wanted the textures and the darkness of the lion fur to pop. I also love to make my photos contrasty, really pump up the blacks to add in the textures.

In my camera bag

Now a days, I’ve upgraded to a Canon EOS 1D. With it I have he kit lens which I find to be my main lens and vastly underrated. For long distances I have a 70-200 lens to go with it. I keep a couple of flashes but I don’t use them too much because of my love for natural light. I Also carry a lot of just in case supplies. Extra batteries, cards, tint lenses, camera cleaners, back up camera and so on.

Feedback

When it comes to animal photos, you have to be very patient; you can’t just one and done. As long as the lighting is good and the scenery can be worked with I can spend 30min to an hour around an animal enclosure taking different angles showing the animal moving and posing. Also if you go to a zoo, make sure you have both you short lens and a long distance lens. That long distance lens will really save you from bad photos.
