Mardi Gras is celebrated around the world but nowhere does it like New Orleans and the surrounding communities. We turn out full force for loads of fun each year~late winter when parades roll every weekend up until the last stretch when the last week has parades daily. Our expression is 'Laissez les bon temps rouler' translated 'Let the good times roll' aptly describes our essence of fun & revelry.Time
This was a daytime parade, early afternoon, with beautiful skies. A day all enjoyed to the fullest. Always a good thing when the weather cooperates for the attendees.Lighting
The clouds filled beautiful skies with diffused light that was a delight to shoot as it minimized harsh light. The texture of the clouds added nice definition to the sky.Equipment
I shot with my 'go to' camera/ lens combo, Nikon 5300 with Tamron 18-270 lens. The variety of settings, light and other considerations make it an excellent choice for general shooting that could vary from candid portraiture to landscape shots.Inspiration
It is important to me to document traditions of communities and cultures around the world with Mardi Gras as a prime example. My area of south Louisiana has strong influences from Spanish, French, African cultures in traditions, language, foods, and celebrations. These play out in daily life. We have a zest for life as the Let the Good Times Roll epitomizes. I was struck by the majesty of the species of horse and its beautiful mane and feet. The knight riding high in the saddle was, for sure, something you don't see every day. The shot captures the essence of the festival season with kings, queens and their court having balls and parades for celebration.Editing
Street photography has its challenges with distractions in a shot. I had to make a decision how to best draw attention to the subject. After minimizing some distractions like a building and people to the back right, I chose to use a radial circle with max feathering to decrease edge light and lead the eye inward. I chose to leave the people to the left of the shot... after all... it is street photography! In my opinion, the setting should often be maintained to varying degrees. In my camera bag
My camera travels with me almost daily! My eye is always seeing beautiful and unique subjects. My only camera is a Nikon 5300 that I use my Tamron 18-270 zoom as I did in this shot. My 2nd lens is a Nikon macro. Occasionally I use a filter for harsh daytime shots but I'm still learning how to adjust it.Feedback
My advice, always have a camera with you. In New Orleans, one can expect an impromptu parade at any time. Always have your 'eye on'. Watch for those unusual happenings and be ready to go for the shot. Keep the mood and atmosphere of the setting within the shot. One the street or on a sidewalk, use what is around you to enhance the shot. Shoot various perspective, go low, switch the angle.. add some zest to the shot. In editing, seek out the essence of the shot and release it. Creativity is the byword. And as always, Happy Shooting!
