We are on a pontoon boat on the Chobe River in northern Botswana. This elephant had just crossed the river from the mainland with her herd and was having a nice dust bath. The dirt she's throwing on her skin acts as a sunscreen. During the dry season, elephants and other animals swim to the island where they will stay until the rain season begins. This process is called rotational grazing. The elephants exist peacefully with water buffalo, hippos, and a huge number and species of birds on this island. They are free from predators, except maybe a crocodile or two in the crossing for the young. Predators like lions don't swim the river and humans are immediately evident so the worst enemy isn't on the island either.
