Behind The Lens

Location

This shot is taken in a very common area in every Indian house. The room is fully dedicated to the gods and goddesses of the Hindu Mythology. 'Mandir' is what it is called and the daily prayers are being held here.

Time

The shot was taken long back in 2017. Since I was curious about some night shots, I was moving to my terrace with my camera at around 8 o'clock in the evening and I came across this scene. It was that time of the day when the evening prayers were just finished. The lamps were lit with some incense clay around.

Lighting

I was fascinated by the smoke that incense clay was creating with the light of the Lamp known as 'Diya' in the background. The shot was taken with a slower shutter speed to get the smoky look and also to bring out the brightness, the high ISO setting was used. No extra lightning equipment was used during this shot.

Equipment

I used the Canon 700D with a 55-250mm lens. The image is taken without any external flash and tripod. Also I have used a sitting table to minimize the camera shake.

Inspiration

The smoky effect that was very common those days was the major idea behind the shot. Although the shot was taken with a thought to create an image with smoky effect but with the result like this, I was satisfied to edit and project an idea behind this shot. The light behind the smoke was also a reason, as I wanted to project the physical connection between the two.

Editing

The edits that were made for this image were the basic tweaks among the brightness and contrast levels. Since the learning phase allows you to try different aspects of editing, this one also went through those experiments. Along with the brightness and the contrast levels, highlights, shadows, the level of blacks and whites were also played with while post processing this image.

In my camera bag

As a learning photographer, I pack my bag with a Canon 700D with a 18-55mm lens and a 55-250mm lens. As I believe that it is the vision that plays a major part while creating an image, gears have not bothered me much. But as I grow I will look forward on adding better and improved tools to my camera bag.

Feedback

The image of these kinds are very much easy to capture. Keeping the Shutter slow will introduce some shake that has to be managed but it also removes all the grains while you shoot in high ISO setting. Patience is the key to get the alignments correct along with the lights available. Sticking to the basics will really help to process the image inside the mind. As I believe that it is not just the post-processing that matters but also the mindset which I call as the pre-processing for the image. Figure out the shot that you can create with the resources around you and just go along with full dedication and faith.
